Orcas before we even arrive

I was looking forward to spotting some Orca once we reached Shetland but, amazingly, we spotted a few only an hour or two after leaving Aberdeen.  We were not quick enough with our camera, so here is one of the sun setting - a lot easier to predict.

The 14 hour sailing was a bit like a Sunday outing on a mill pond.  The only waves to be seen were the ones made by the ferry.  We slept through the stop-off at Kirkwall but got up in plenty of time to watch the approach into Lerwick.

Approaching Bressay Sound, our first sight of Lerwick.
Jimmy Perez's house.
A red building.

We wandered around Lerwick looking for some breakfast.  We managed a decent coffee, some fluffy bread and some dodgy cheese from a deli which we eat on a peaceful seafront.  Another tourist passed and stopped for a chat - she'd been getting about by bus and could not recommend it highly enough.

We drove south to Cunningsburgh and the caravan site which doubles as a marina.

We set up the caravan, chatted to a couple of other caravaners (both from Shetland and one who only stayed 5 miles up the road) had a quick soup lunch and set off on the bikes to St Ninian's Isle.  It was busy - at least 8 cars/campervans.  We walked over the beach to the "island" and then walked the long way round to get to the ruined church.  We had a cuppa and some fruit cake before cycling on to the beach at Scousbourgh.

We were pretty exhausted when we got back to the caravan and still had to cook dinner.
