Long Walk to Lang Ayre

We were up early to pack up and drive along to Ulsta to catch the ferry back to the mainland (Shetland).  We were a bit early and got on the one before we had booked.  Drove past Sullom Voe down to Brae and parked up at the site, again beside the marina.  Quickly set up the caravan and drove north to start the walk up Ronas Hill.  The sign at the bottom of the road is not very welcoming: "Road Only Suitable for Off Road Vehicles".  Apart from some loose stones at the start, it was absolutely fine.  There were three cars parked at the transmitter, which we hadn't expected.  The walk to the top didn't take too long but the slope is so gradual you can't tell where the summit is till we got there.  Two woman were sheltering at the trig point; we had a quick look in the chambered cairn nearby before heading off down hte hil with great views across Ronas Voe.

We worked our way down to the west end of Lang Ayre to the handy rope to help us down to the shore.  It was just as amazing as we remembered.  Almost prehistoric.  The waves were crashing in and the stones were rumbling under the surf.  We wandered along to the east end, took some photos and videos and wandered back to the west end.  We chatted to the two woman we had met at the top - at least one of them was a local and this was the first time they had been; they were amazed too.

After getting back to the car and driving back to the caravan, it was just too nice to stay in, so we went out on the bikes for a ride down Muckle Roe, an island nearby connected by a bridge.  It was a lovely ride and at the end of the road there was a signpost to a lighthouse (2km).  So, we left the bikes and started walking.  It was a well trodden path and a longer 2 km than we had expected but great views once again.
